Haverfordwest v Tenby

Molson CoorsHAVERFORDWEST 54 (2) TENBY 98 (12 pts)
2nd May 2015

The Molson Coors sponsored Tenby team travelled to Haverfordwest to play last year's runners-up in the Pembrokeshire League Division One. The last time these two teams played, Haverfordwest were victorious on all rinks and recorded a score of 14-0. What was more impressive for the county town side was their victory was at the Sutton Street headquarters of the Sharks. Tenby travelled and arrived in rain and it was to the credit of the Haverfordwest green-keeping staff that the game was played at all. However; an hour into the game, the rain ceased and the game was completed, with the only complaint being the cold. Before the game, captain Joe Richards asked both teams to stand for a minute's silence following the sudden passing of John Roberts, of Neyland, father of Tenby's own John Roberts. John, a very popular figure in Pembrokeshire bowls, will be sadly missed. He worked tirelessly for the Neyland club as both their secretary, fixture secretary and county delegate for many years and our thoughts and condolences go to John and his family.

Rink one: The Kieran Peregrine four of Mike Jackson, Jon Webb and Chris Court had a close game against the Gareth Barrett rink. At five and 10 ends they were a single shot behind (3-4 and 9-10). They levelled things up at 15 ends (13-13), but a costly count against them on end 18 (four shots) meant they were very much up against it during the closing stages, finally losing by single shot, 18-19. Rink two: Luke Guymer made his first start for the Sharks, playing `third' with Paul Diment, Dai Rees and Cameron White made up the rink. In a similar vein to last week, Diment went off to a flyer, leading 9-1 after six. A dropped count of four shots gave some impetus to the Alan Whitehouse rink, but a great shot by Luke Guymer took the wind from their sails on the following end and the Tenby four strelled to a comfortable 22-14 victory, with Dai Rees and Cameron White both having excellent games.

Rink three: Craig Guymer, now the team's first aid specialist, also made his first start. Together with new vice-captain, Gerald Hewitt, Huw Nicholas and Ryan Thomas, they competed against a Haverfordwest rink led by the county team manager, PDS Jenkins. After five ends, Tenby led by 6-2, but the Haverfordwest rink scored a three on the 10th end to trail 10-8 and levelled matters on the next end 10-10. A scoring sequence of 2, 1, 4 and 2 put Craig's men back in control and they eventually closed out the match 23-14. Rink four: Last week's top rink also claimed top honours this week. Andrew Muskett, Peter Day and Ben Sheldon were joined by captain Joe Richards - in for Aaron Lloyd. At five ends they trailed 4-6, but then they won an incredible 15 out of a possible 16 ends, scoring a 5 and two 4s along the way to win against Richard O'Leary, 35-7. A win against arguably our closest rivals on their own green carried on the form of the previous week against Saundersfoot and momentum is good leading into the group stages of the Carruthers Shield which will be over the next three weeks. The first game (tomorrow) is against Fishguard (home), followed by games against Whitland (away) and Pembroke Dock (home) on following Saturdays.

Tenby v Saundersfoot

Molson CoorsTENBY (12 pts) SAUNDERSFOOT 54 (2)
25th April 2015

The Molson Coors sponsored Tenby team entertained their local rivals last Saturday in the first league match of the season in the Pembrokeshire League Division One. Tenby have won seven league championships in a row and are looking to make history this year by being the first team to win eight successive titles. Rink one: The Tenby team had to field a 'triple' and play one short due to a late withdrawal. Mike Jackson, Jon Webb and Kieran Peregrine started well and led 7-2 after five ends. The lead was maintained at 10 ends (10-4) and steadily increased over the remaining 11 ends by taking 5, 3 and a late 4 to record a winning margin of 29-10. After the compulsory 25 per cent penalty was deducted (for playing with a player short), the recorded win was 21.75 against 10.

Rink two: Tenby welcomed new recruit Chris Court, who played for Haverfordwest last season. Chris teamed up with another former Haverfordwest and Whitland player, Ryan Thomas, with Dai Rees and Chris Thomas making up the rink. The Saundersfoot rink skipped by the experience Merv Dennis started badly and Tenby built up a very nice buffer when leading by 8-2 after seven ends. Credit, however, to the Villagers' rink as they took control between ends 11 and 14 when taking eight shots without reply to lead 15-10. A Tenby rally of four consecutive singles kept the home rink in touch, but some experienced play by the Saundersfoot  quartet saw them close out the game and record an 18-14

Rink three: Last year, the most successful 'back end' combination for the Pembrokeshire county team was that of Day and Muskett, The Tenby selectors went with this combination and they were not disappointed. Ben Sheldon and Aaron Lloyd had solid games to ensure the Tenhy rink always had a stranglehold on this match. At five ends, Tenby held a slender one shot lead (4-3). After winning all but one between ends eight to 15, the Tenby rink led 23-5, which included 'counts' of a 5 and a 4. Sharing the remaining ends 4-4, the impressive Tenby four recorded a 27-9 victory.

Rink four: The Tenby rink of Cameron White, How Nicholas, captain Joe Richards and Paul Diment were a team certainly in a rush and soared into a 11-0 lead after only three ends. However, great credit to the experienced Berywn Dennis who changed the length and saw the Diment lead recede faster than his hairline. At 12 ends, the score was 12-12. The two teams shared a count of three to level up 15-15, but then the veteran Tenby skip played some telling bowls to take a 3, 1 and 4, to take control of the game. A dropped count of two singles followed by a further 4 and 2 saw the Tenby rink win by a margin of 29-17, concluding, a very good start for the defending champions.

The team looks strong with the likes of Luke Rees, Gerald Hewitt, Luke and Craig Guymer returning in the next few weeks (health and safety courses permitting!). With John Roberts and Lee Williamson also featuring, the competition for places is extremely hot. Finally, happy birthday to Chris Thomas and well done to Tenby Five Arches and their captain Ben Cloake for winning their first league game away to Haverfordwest Castle. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenby visit Haverfordwest and it is hoped that another strong performance will continue the momentum leading into the Carruthers Shield matches.

Haverfordwest Castle v Five Arches

25th April 2015

Darts champion and Five Arches captain Ben Cloake, travelled with his team to Haverfordwest for the start of the 2015 season. Looking for a good start to avoid any relegation battle later on in the season, the Five Arches duly responded with a solid 10 points to 4 win against the Castle side. Returning skip Ben Simmons with his rink of John, Johno and the irrepressible Steve, certainly made hay as the sun shone in Haverfordwest, winning by a massive 38 shots to 8. A great performance from all four. On the next rink, Ashley, greatly assisted by Dai, Bill and Kev, pulled out all the stops to win a tough battle against Castle stalwart, Mike Codd by 19 shots to 12. The Castle quartet included ex Tenby member Colin Jones.

Captain Ben with Tenby new member David Lloyd, Mike and Peter certainly had a battle on the tricky rink three. After six ends the game was even at 6 shots all, by the 14th end the Castle squad had pulled out a slender 4 shot advantage. However, over the remaining third of the game they extended their lead to win by 25 shots to 13. Neil and his rink had a challenging day out on rink 4. Ably supported by Ken, Fred and Harold, the game was delicately poised after 8 ends with the Castle four leading by 5 shots to 4. Unfortunately a run of six ends without scoring enabled the Castle boys to extend their lead, However a fightback on the closing ends ensured the lead did not extend by too many. The Five Arches quartet eventually losing by 22 shots to 12.

Next game is at home to newly promoted Fishguard & Goodwick on Saturday, another good performance would set us up nicely for the rest of the season.

Tenby v Kidwelly

18th April 2015

Kidwelly visited Tenby on a sunny Saturday afternoon last weekend to play their annual pre-season friendly against the Sharks as part of a two-day tour to the 'seaside'. Fielding a strong team of their own club players and a number of guests, the tourists were always going to be a difficult side to beat at such an early stage in the season, particularly with the home team themselves being made up of a mix of two `Tenby' and four `Five Arches' rinks. Captain for the day was Gerald Hewitt, who welcomed the visitors to the hallowed Sutton Street turf and, after a difficult couple of seasons, it was a pleasure to see the immaculate green almost back to its imperious best, Many remarks were made as to how fast and true it was running so early in the season - but unfortunately on this occasion it seemed to suit the Kidwelly bowlers better than Tenby, as they eventually ran out comfortable winners.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Kidwelly skips only) were:

H. Ebdon, T. Powling, G. Hewitt 16; G. Thorburn 19.
C. White. S. Peregrine, C. Court, K. Peregrine 19; K. Evans 18.
F. Broomhead. K. Lewis, P. Diment, A. Hooper 12; R. Burden 28.

Pendine v Five Arches

11th April 2015

New Captain Ben Cloake and his Five Arches team travelled to Pendine for the first friendly match of the season. On a blustery but pleasant afternoon they enjoyed a narrow three shot victory. The Five Arches were boosted by the addition of Tenby's finest, Cameron and Gerald and also the local knowledge and guile of Pendine lady Gwen. Neil and his rink of Steve, Mike and John had an interesting game on rink 2. Trailing by nine shots at the tea interval , they scored 16 shots in the second half and by only conceding 2 , ran out winners by 23 shots to 18. Next door on rink 3, Captain Ben and his rink of Johno, Ken and Bill had a battle against wily Pendine skip Mal Evans. A close game all the way through, the Pendine quartet eventually edged the win by five shots.

Gerald, ably supported by Roger, Gwen and Tony had a strong game against Arwel's foursome.  Completely in control all through the match, they eased to a comfortable 21 shots to 14 victory. On rink 5, Ashley and his rink of Cameron, Ben and Steve were involved in another tight game. The match was decided on the final end with the Pendine rink edging ahead to win by four shots. An encouraging start for the Five Arches with the beginning of the league program only a fortnight away.  Many thanks to Pendine for their hospitality. Our next game, another friendly against Kidwelly on Saturday (18th).
