County Finals 2014

Tenby bowlers sweep the board at county finals
12 July 2014

Tenby Bowling Club swept the board at the Pembroke County Bowls Association finals on Saturday. Held at Fishguard and Goodwick Bowling Club, the home of this year's president, Alan Newberry, for the first time ever, the blue and white army won all the main trophies to qualify for the national finals week next month in Llandrindod Wells. Six and two were certainly Tenby's lucky numbers - six titles, a sixth triples victory for Peter Day and sixth win in the rinks for John Roberts, while it was two trophies each for Paul Diment, John and Cameron White (singles and triples, rink and pairs, Under 18 singles and Under 25 singles, respectively). In fact, Peter's sixth triples means that he is all-time record winner in this discipline, now leading former Welsh triples winner, Andrew Muskett,. who is sat on five.

John Roberts is third in the all-time rinks winner behind Peter Howells, of Haverfordwest
(seven), and Paul Diment (eight). Paul's second singles title matches that of his grandfather, the late Bob Diment. In fact, Paul's singles title came 12 years after his first (2002 and 2014) - the same time 'delay' as Bob's! (1954 and 1966). As well as winning his second singles title and a second title in the triples later in the day, Paul also reduced his opponent to a mere two shots in the final. so two was certainly Paul's lucky number for the day! John's pairs partner was Mike Jackson, with the duo winning their second pairs title together and John's third (Peter Howells, of Haverfordwest, holds the record of six titles), while the duo were joined by Joe Richards (recording his first county win) and Ryan Thomas in the rinks (second win), while Paul (three triples titles) and Peter were joined by Ryan to clinch the triples. The day's other winners were Roger Price, Haverfordwest who claimed the Over 60 singles for the first time as he was joined by first time winners, Stewart King Thomas and Mal Evans, Pendine (Over 60 pairs), Stewart and David King Thomas, Mal Evans and Mal Dix, Pendine, won the Over 60 rinks for a second time, Gareth Barrett, Haverfordwest (Under 35 singles fora second time) and Marion Evans and Steve Dick, Saundersfoot (mixed pairs) for the first time.
